MAGIC IN THE BACKYARD, what I believe is Kellie Elmore's debut poetry collection, is yet another phenomenal offering from the folks at Winter Goose Publishing. Herein are poems that take me back to sultry summers and citrus-colored skies, rural dirt roads and fresh romance. These poems are at the other end of the spectrum from the grim and honest poetic offerings of Raymond Carver or William Stratton. These poems are magical and benevolent, reminding me much of Mary Oliver's innocent observations. Elmore is a visual poet, descriptive of the colors and surroundings that she remembers, especially her beloved South. There's not really a grittiness to many of the poems. They are enchanting and bucolic, and they fill a reader with nostalgia as though these experiences and vistas that Elmore writes of were their own memories. A beautiful collection of poems that right away convinced me to check out Elmore's later works.Product details

Kellie takes you with her in her poems, you can breath the mountain air and get to know just how there really is " Magic" in your pun backyard.
The writing that makes up Magic in the Backyard is amazing. It is so heartfelt, honest and has such a great tone overall. I recommend this book for anyone who loves great poetry. Kellie has such a great voice in this book, it was worth every dollar I spent and then some!
Kellie has created a beautiful collection where her words paint a vivid picture to allow memories to come alive. She has an almost mystical way of letting us into her world to share her memories while letting it spark our own inside our heart. A delight to read, Kellie has taken us on quite the journey through her home in the south. A wonderful first collection, I look forward to reading more from her! )
I read this book and started my second read within the first 10 hours of receiving it.
Such an emotion evoking book that gave me chuckles to crying gut wrenching sobs.
The memories of being raised by her grandmother and all the ins and outs of that relationship
and others in her young life will capture your attention and you won't be able to stop reading.
The beautiful compelling verbiage in Miss Elmore's MAGIC IN THE BACKYARD will thrill you.
THE must read of the year and should be required for every literary classroom.
Kellie Elmore is definitely one to watch in the future as she is a prolific writer.
April saw me collect a number of poetry books in honor of National Poetry Month. "Magic in the Backyard" was one poetry collection I could not put down until I had finished it. (Normally I skip back and forth) Kellie Elmore had me completely caught up with life in Tennessee! The poems are fantastic, and the prose you will fall into, waking on a veranda on a summer afternoon with the smell of the fields and a glass of sweet tea. She pulls you in, and she does not let you go. It's a wonderful collection, that brings to mind all those wonderful memories of a time that was a little bit slower, a little bit simpler. It touches your heart and invigorates your senses. A must read collection for readers of any genre...and for fans of poetry...this one's GOLD!
Let me start by saying that while I love to read, I don't really love poetry. I like it. I'll read it. But I don't seek it out. I bought this book only because it was written by a childhood friend. With all the notes we passed in school, I was familiar enough with her writing to be sure I would like it, but I had no idea just how good it would be!
People from our neck of the woods (SE TN) will absolutely recognize the backyard. People who are not from our neck of the woods? Well, y'all are gonna wanna pay us a visit. The imagery and amazing descriptions in this book will absolutely take the reader to the very spot the author is telling of. "American Honey" is real. It's so real you may feel like you've been spied on. The raw emotion of loss in "December Came In April" and "Driving Bye" will bring you to tears. "Elmer's Money" will make you laugh out loud. Anyone who has ever known a little boy will recognize "Wooden Castles". All you "Runaway Dreamers" will understand and know just how right she is.
Do yourself a favor. Read this book. Even if you think you don't like poetry, give this one a try. I think the world is about to discover an amazing writer with a truly magical backyard!
Kellie paints beautiful pictures with her poetry as she tells stories about how life unfolds around her. Switching between the perspectives of childhood and adulthood, she employs the senses, memory and emotion to immerse the reader in each experience. Nature is a motif that is used consistantly in the collection, often personifying it, and giving her poetry a fairytale-like quality. In some poems you really feel the magic that the author is trying to create.
The poems get better as you read and I enjoyed the fact that they didn't always use the same structure. Overall, I think what I liked best about "Magic in the Backyard" is the lightness in the collection. Even when poems are more somber they still find a way to shine. I can't really explain it and would suggest reading it yourself to see what I mean.
If you're looking for a collection with beautiful imagery that will probably make you smile, this is it. It isn't the type of poetry that leaves much to interpretation and has a way of making the reader feel right at home.
